Monarch
The Resume
(454-August 26, 526)
King of the Ostrogoths, a barbarian tribe
King of Italy
Conquered Italy for the Byzantine Emperor Zeno (AD 493)
Known as 'Dietrich von Bern' in modern German legends
Illegitimate son of Theodomir
Why he might be annoying
Theodoric is only a Romanized version of his name; his real name in Gothic was 'Thiudareiks.'
He was inconsistent with his alliances.
When he conquered Italy, he promised to spare the former king, Odoacer, but decided to kill him during a banquet instead.
He lived as a hostage in Constantinople (capital of the Byzantine Empire, present day Istanbul) during most of his childhood.
Most Romans were less than thrilled with the fact that a foreigner ran their country.
Germans consider him a legend, but he wasn't even born in Germany.
Why he might not be annoying
He was well cultured but still proud of his 'Barbarian' roots.
He attempted to reconstruct a decayed Italy.
He respected Roman laws and customs when he conquered their country.
During his years as a hostage, he received education that most of his fellow barbarians could only dream of.
He spoke Greek, Latin, and his native language, Gothic.
He exceeded the average life expectancy of the time (died when he was approximately 72).
