    He turned extremely rebellious after his father died.
    His mother sent him to many detention centers as a teenager.
    He ran away from home at 14.
    By the age of 15, he had been arrested for robbery, truancy and petty larceny.
    He was sentenced to the high-security Preston School of Industry for 15 months. (1952)
    When he was in his late teens, he made a living as a truck driver.
    In 1957, he attempted to rob a restaurant at 10:30 at night, thinking it was 3:00 in the morning. The restaurant owners called the police and he was arrested. After spending a night in jail, he escaped only to be caught soon after. He wound up being sentenced to a 15-year term at San Quentin prison.
    He was fired from many of the jobs he had while in prison.
    He became a major recording artist by covering Liz Anderson's '(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers.'
    He was an alcoholic.

    His father died from a brain tumor when he was 9 years old.
    He was called 'the most important country artist to emerge in the 1960s.'
    He combined country, jazz, blues and folk in his music.
    He taught himself how to play the guitar when he was 12 years old.
    His wife became pregnant with another man's child while he was in prison.
    His sentence was shortened to 2 years and 9 months in jail and 2 years and 3 months on parole.
    He patched up with his wife upon his release from prison.
    He had three Top Ten hits ('Swinging Doors,' 'The Bottle Let Me Down,' 'I'm a Lonesome Fugitive') 6 years after being released from prison.
    His song, 'That's the News,' was a big F You to commercial radio.
    He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. (1985)
