    He got his stage name from a comic book detective.
    His death was overshadowed by the death of Patsy Cline.
    He traded five trapped rabbits for his first guitar.
    He served in the US army during World War II, where he fought at the Battle of the Bulge and performed for troops in Paris nightclubs.
    He was a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
    He was killed in the same plane crash that killed Patsy Cline.
    He did not wear gaudy rhinestone covered suits like most male country singers.
