The Dutch swapped New York to the British for Suriname (1667).
Sometimes it is spelled Surinam
Suriname is eerily close to 'surname.'
Its people are Surinamers or Surinamese.
Although Dutch owned, most of its people are of Indian or French descent.
Descents of 17th and 18th century slaves are called 'Maroons.'
Although Dutch is the official language and English is widely spoken, they have their own language Sranang Tongo (Surinamese, also called Taki-Taki).
The economy is primarily based on the bauxite industry.
Inflation rose over 600% (1974-75).
South American drug dealers use Suriname for drugs heading to Europe.
The Suriname Toad is flat with a triangular head, beady little eyes, no tongue or teeth.
Why Suriname might not be annoying
Its people enjoy moderated climate with trade winds.
It exports lots of bananas, mahogany and teak.
