Musician
    (July 8, 1924-April 13, 2005)
    Born in Fairmont, West Virginia
    Blues/R&B pianist
    Sideman for Chuck Berry (1952-73)
Recorded the solo albums 'Johnnie Be Bad' (1991), 'Rockin' Eighty-Eights' (1991), 'Blue Hand Johnnie' (1993), 'That'll Work' (1993), 'Johnnie Be Back' (1995), 'Johnnie B. Live' (1997) and 'Johnnie Be Eighty and Still Bad!' (2005)
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a sideman (2001)
Berry claimed that when he banned drinking alcohol on the tour bus, Johnson would comply by sticking his head out the window to drink.
Johnson denied that specific story, but admitted to being a heavy drinker and that it affected his playing.
He dropped out of the music biz and became a bus driver.
He unsuccessfully sued Berry, claiming he was entitled to writing credits and royalties for over 50 songs (2000).
He joined the Marines, where he became a member of Bobby Troup's all-servicemen jazz band.
Berry wrote the song 'Johnny B. Goode' about him.
Keith Richards (and others) pointed out his importance to Berry's music in the film 'Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll' (1987), leading to his re-discovery.
He gave up drinking after a show with Eric Clapton during which he started bleeding uncontrollably from the nose (1991).
He was called 'one of the unsung heroes of rock and roll.'
