Why he might be annoying
His name sounds similar to Cambodian Khmer Rouge dictator Pol Pot.
His first opera performance was a 1999 karaoke contest, dressed as Pavarotti.
His amateur status for the show was called into question as he explained he was never paid as an opera singer.
He met the woman he married in 2003 through an Internet chat room.
Why he might not be annoying
He was bullied in school and used opera as a means of escapism.
He saved for a trip to Italy, took singing lessons and got to perform in front of his idol Pavarotti (with favorable critique).
He had to put his dream on hold for four years after a 2003 bicycle accident left him with a broken collarbone.
He performed Puccini's
'Nessum doria' for the TV show, wowed the judges and came out the winner with over 2 million votes cast.
His debut album reached #1 in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and three Scandinavian countries.
