    Graduated from the University of Texas (1971)
    Artillery and engineer officer in West Germany (1973-1976, 1981-1984)
    Army Inspector General (1976-1977)
    Aide to the Army Chief of STaff (1977-1981)
    US 1st Cavalry Artillery commander (1987-199?)
    Promoted to general officer rank (c.1990)
    Senior staff officer with the 1st Cavalry during Operation Desert Storm.
    Served with the US 2nd Division in Korea (1995-1997)
    Third Army Commander (1997-2000)
    Commander in Chief, US Central Command (CENTCOM) (2000-2003)
    Retired following the US military victory in Iraq (July 7, 2003)
    Replaced by General John Abizaid
    Decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, four Legions of Merit, three Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts, and 2 DSMs
    Married for over 30 years with one daughter

Why he might be annoying:

    Donald Rumsfeld offered him the post of Army Chief of Staff, but he declined it.
    He spent much of his married life away from his wife.
    His career didn't take off until the Persian Gulf War.
    He predicted that the Constitution would be repealed if terrorists used WMD on the US.
    He clashed with Donald Rumsfeld on several occasions.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He is known to be very outspoken and candid.
    He took great measures to help protect his troops and to improve their living conditions.
    He avoided overexposure to the news media.
    He was honest about casualties but accurately predicted that US forces would achieve the objectives very quickly.
    He went to the same high school as Laura Bush.
    He directed US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan after 9/11.
