    Winner of seven Hugo awards, three Nebulas, four Prometheus and the Science Fiction Writers of America and Gandalf Grandmaster awards
    Earned a BS in physics from the University of Minnesota
    Founded the Society for Creative Anachronisms
    Best known for books dealing with time travel and alternative history

Why he might be annoying:

    Early in his career his works were heavily political but the politics jumped all over the place, in one book pro democratic, in another not.
    The heroes in his books frequently chose duty over morality.

Why he might not be annoying:

    In the latter part of his career, his books cast free, open, and libertarian societies as preferable.
    He is one of the most decorated authors in science fiction history.
    He wrote over 100 hundred books and hundreds of short stories.
    He was the father-in-law of science fiction writer Greg Bear.
    He's been the subject of three biographies.
    He was best friends with fellow scifi writer Gordon R. Dickson and died only a few months after him.
    He tried to make the science in his works realistic.
    He also wrote mysteries and non-fiction scientific books.
