    He ran for the U.S. presidency against James Buchanan, but got only 33% of the vote (1856).
    He conflicted with Abraham Lincoln on several issues, leading to his removal as commander of western Union forces (1861).
    He resigned from his job as a Union general after losing several battles.

    He discovered several plants, such as the Single-leaf Pinyon.
    He helped map the Des Moines River and Sierra Nevada region in the 1840s.
