The Resume

    (August 5, 1940-February 18, 2008)
    Born in Marseilles, France
Son of art dealer Daniel Wildenstein
Family assets included a museum-quality art collection, stables of racehorses, real estate and a Japanese department store chain
With his brother Guy, inherited $10 billion
    Married Jocelyn Wildenstein (1978-99)

Why he might be annoying:

He was reportedly a bully in school.
He was not a graceful loser: after his horse finished second at the Royal Ascot, he kvetched, ‘The dope-testing machine must be broken.’ (2004)
He was a regular client of famed Parisian brothel keeper Madame Claude.
He had an eye lift and multiple liposuctions.
When Jocelyn came back to their apartment unexpectedly and interrupted a tryst with his 19-year-old Russian mistress, he greeted her wearing a towel and pointing a semi-automatic pistol at her (September 2, 1997).
During his divorce from Jocelyn, he tried to avoid paying a hefty settlement by claiming to have an annual income of only $100,000, even though his spending ran to over $1 million a month (with the bills picked up by his father).
He and his brother were sued by their stepmother, Sylvia, who claimed they had deceived her into signing away her share of Daniel’s inheritance (2005).
A French Court of Appeals ruled that Sylvia was entitled to half of Daniel’s estate and ordered Alec and Guy to pay 20 million euros as a first installment until a final settlement could be determined.

Why he might not be annoying:

His father refused to let him go to college, arguing there was nothing he could learn there that would help him run the family business.
While courting Jocelyn, he had thousands of white orchids sent to the hair salon she visited every Tuesday – ‘You couldn’t even get through the door.’
He helped make the family racing stable one of the most successful in Europe.
Unlike Jocelyn, he continued to look human after his plastic surgery.
