He often wore a crown and cape when performing.
His career in the 50s lagged when regional music lost popularity.
He boasted that it was he who put ‘pep’ into old style French zydeco.
One of his most popular songs is called ‘I’m a Hog for You.’
Like other successful musicians, he was sometimes accused of ‘selling out.’
Why he might not be annoying
He cut sugar cane and drove a truck for an oil refinery in the 40s.
He modernized zydeco by blending it with blues and rock.
He redesigned the traditional washboard instrument so it could hang from the shoulders.
He won a Grammy (in the ethnic music category) in 1984.
He continued to perform when dying from diabetes.
He managed to make accordion music cool.
