    (December 16, 1888-October 9, 1934)
Born in Cetinje, Principality of Montenegro
    Birth name was Alexander Karađorđević
Last king of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (1921–29)
First king of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1929–34)
Assassinated at age 45 by Bulgarian nationalist Vlado Chernozemski during a royal visit to Marseilles, France
He was not first in line for the throne but his elder brother, Crown Prince George, was made to renounce the claim due to scandalous behavior.
He abolished the Yugoslavian Constitution, suppressed Parliamentary procedures and introduced a personal dictatorship (January 6, 1929).
He tried unsuccessfully to discontinue use of Serbian Cyrillic in exchange for exclusive use of Latin alphabet.
Though initially refusing to undertake any public functions on a Tuesday (three family members died on the day), it was a Tuesday when he was driven through the streets of Marseilles on a good will visit and murdered.
At age 21, he contracted stomach typhus and nearly died, leaving him with stomach problems for rest of his life.
As commander of the First Army, he achieved victories in the First and Second Balkan Wars, and later led the Serbian Army through a major battle to secure Allied victory during World War I.
His was the first royal assassination captured on film and one of the most noteworthy pieces of newsreel in existence.
Also killed were his driver, fellow passenger and French Foreign Minister Louis Barthou, and his assassin, who was cut down by a French policeman's sword and beaten to death by the crowd.
He is mentioned in the 1988 song 'Don Juan' by the Pet Shop Boys.
