Why he might be annoying:

When he was 12, he stowed away on a passenger train from Texas to New York City.
He divorced and remarried Leatrice O'Farrell.
Between those marriages, he was wed to Eileen Clark for under two years.
He was accused of using his media holdings to promote his political career.
He said his loss in the Democratic primary race for New York City mayor was caused by 'racism, pure and simple.'

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was 13, he was beaten by a cop for handing out NAACP pamphlets in a white neighborhood.
He served with the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II, winning combat stars in the Mediterranean and Italian theaters.
While attending law school, he worked at a post office from 4 PM to midnight, then worked as a subway conductor until 8:30 AM, and reported to school at 9:30 AM.
His remarriage to Leatrice lasted 57 years until his death.
He was arrested as a Freedom Rider in Mississippi and Alabama during the 1960s.
Barack Obama called him 'a true hero to African-Americans in New York City and around the country.'
