Biblical Character
The Resume
(circa 1-67)
Birth name was Simon
Wrote '1st and 2nd Peter'
First Christian bishop of Rome
Also known as 'Simon Peter,' 'Cephas' or 'Kephas'
Why he might be annoying
The Gospels depict him as one of the dumber disciples (sort of the Homer Simpson of the Bible).
When Jesus was arrested, Peter pretended not to know him, even though Jesus had warned him about doing that the day before.
After Jesus died, he let St. Paul boss him around.
Scholars don't believe he actually wrote '1st and 2nd Peter' himself, since he was probably illiterate.
He appears in a lot of corny jokes about Heaven and the Pearly Gates.
Why he might not be annoying
He was a professional fisherman.
He is considered one of Jesus' most loyal disciples.
Jesus called him 'the rock on which I will build my church.'
He was important in spreading Christianity around the ancient world.
Catholics consider him the first Pope.
The Emperor Nero had him crucified.
Out of respect for Jesus, he asked to be crucified upside down.
The Bible states he will be given 'the keys to the kingdom of Heaven,' which is why he is considered Heaven's gatekeeper.
