He is best known for starring in two cheesy Hercules movies from the 50's.

He dislocated his shoulder while doing a stunt for 'The Last Days of Pompeii,' eventually causing him to retire from films.
He was often confused with George Reeves (Superman).

He won many bodybuilding titles, including 'Mr. America' (1947), 'Mr. World' (1948), and Mr. Universe (1950).
He served in the military during World War II.
Both of his 'Hercules' films were lampooned on 'Mystery Science Theater 3000.'
He was strongly against the use of drugs in bodybuilding.
His wife died from a stroke in 1989.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno have cited him as an influence.
He was the highest paid actor in Europe.
