Won the Distinguished Flying Cross, National Geographic's Gold Medal and French Cross of Knight of the Legion of Honor (1932)

Why she might be annoying:

She and her co-pilot, Fred Noonan, were lost in a round-the-world flight over the Pacific (1937)
They were poorly trained on using radio navigation.
She left behind lower frequency equipment that could have been used to locate her.
It is most likely that they miscalculated direction and the plane ran out of fuel and crash.
Others prefer to believe outlandish rumors, like she was on a spy mission, she wanted to retire without fame in the South Pacific, she committed suicide, she was capture by the Japanese, etc.

Why she might not be annoying:

She is the first female and second person (Charles Lindbergh being the first), to fly solo across the Atlantic (March 30, 1932).
She is the first person to fly the Pacific Ocean solo (Honolulu to Oakland - 1935).
She embarked on the longest circumnavigation of the globe, around the equator, 29,000 miles (1937).
With less than 7,000 miles left on the trip, she disappeared over the Pacific Ocean (July 2, 1937).
She said: 'Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace . . . Each time we make a choice, we pay with courage . . .'
