Wrote the books 'An Anagram of Ideas on Art, Form and Film (1946)' and 'Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti (1953)'
First filmmaker to receive a Guggenheim for creative work in motion pictures (1947)

She married the soundtrack guy from 'Meshes of the Afternoon' in 1960, then died a year later (damaged goods!).

In her honor, the American Film Institute posthumously created the Maya Deren Award, to recognize 'Independent Film & Video Artists.'
Her family fled Russia in 1922 to avoid the massacre against Russian Jews.
She graduated New York University with a B.A. in journalism and political science (1936).
She founded the Creative Film Foundation (late 1950's) to reward independent filmmakers for their achievements.
