Why he might be annoying:

He had a raspy voice and beady little eyes.
He was a stunt tester for the 50's TV game show 'Beat The Clock.' (as was his buddy James Dean)
He could never quite break out of the label of 'character actor.'
    He smoked.
He married three times and divorced twice.
An episode of the TV series 'Tales of the Unexpected' that he starred in, was shown for the first time over three years after he died.

Why he might not be annoying:

Growing up during the Depression, he helped his struggling family out as a fruit picker, picking strawberries for 2¢ a quart.
He served 2 years in the United States Marines as an airplane mechanic (1945-47).
His first starring role was as gangster John Dillinger (1973). His performance was stellar, but the movie studio did nothing to promote it and it tanked at the box office.
He was in at least one movie every year between 1964 and 1983 (a year after his death).
He wanted to save enough money from acting to buy a horse farm in Kentucky, but died of a massive heart attack at age 53 before he could fulfill his dream (1982).
He was the subject of the documentary 'Warren Oates: Across the Border (1993).'
He was the topic of the song 'Warren Oates' by Australian band Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes (1994).
