He used many odd instruments on his albums, his personal trademark being the hammered dulcimer.
Unlike many Christian musicians, he didn't consider his music a ministry, just a way to pay the bills.
He was often seen unshaven and barefoot with unkempt hair.
His fans are nicknamed 'Ragamuffins.'
He wasn't wearing a seat belt in the car accident that killed him.
Why he might not be annoying
He learned to play piano at four.
'Awesome God' was named one of the top three Christian songs of the 1980's.
It has been remade in many different genres including ska, rap, and rock.
He wrote many popular songs for other artists.
He modeled his life after St. Francis of Assisi, taking a vow of poverty and spending much of his free time helping the poor.
All the money he earned went to his church. They paid him a small salary and gave the rest to charity. It was his idea.
He taught music to children for free on a Navajo reservation.
His friend, also in the car accident, was saved at St. Francis Hospital.
He won a posthumous Dove Award (Christian Grammy) for 'My Deliverer.'
He was nominated for twelve Dove Awards.
His music helped inspired a new generation of Christian musicians.
Friend and producer Reed Arvin said 'Rich Mullins was the best writer in contemporary Christian music, and he is utterly irreplaceable.'
Michael W. Smith said 'Nobody on this planet wrote songs like he did and I feel we've lost one of the only true poets in our industry.'
Some people get a tribute song. Mullins got an entire album of Christian music's biggest stars singing his songs in dedication to him.
