Author
    (December 13, 1949- )
    Born in Cleveland, Ohio
Birth name was Roberta Ann MacAvoy
    Fantasy and sci-fi author
Wrote the Black Dragon series (1983-86), the Trio for Lute (1983-84) and the Lens of the World series (1990-93)
Also wrote 'The Book of Kells' (1985), 'The Grey Horse' (1987), 'The Third Eagle' (1989) and 'Death and Resurrection' (2011)
She said her books are hard to market because they 'fall in between genres.'
When she included characters having sex in 'The Book of Kells,' she got letters from older readers saying 'Agatha Christie never had to use language like that!'
She claimed to have studied every martial art 'from tai-chi to rip-out-your-opponent’s-vocal-chords-in-the-Puerto-Rican-style.'
There was an 18 year gap between new novels (1993-2011).
She won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer (1984).
Her book series have very different settings. ('Why do I keep changing things? I get embarrassed repeating myself.')
She gave a shout out to Anne McCaffrey in 'The Book of Kells.'
A major reason for the long wait between novels was that she developed the neuromuscular condition dystonia, which caused chronic pain and frequent episodes of paralysis.
