The team was formed from the remaining assets of the old Detroit Drive team.
They are considered arena football's Green Bay Packers, since they play in the league's smallest market. Despite its smaller market, it has lasted longer than two Detroit arena franchises (Detroit Drive, Detroit Fury).
They won their first ArenaBowl in their fourth year of existence.
Their ArenaBowl win gave the city of Grand Rapids some publicity.
