He trained to be a jockey and later a boxer before settling on acting.
He always claimed that he was born in Seaton, Devon, England (he wasn't).

He overcame his poor background.
He was an accomplished stage actor, specializing in farce.
He died of a stroke.
He will be forever remembered as the first actor to portray Doctor Who.
