Why he might be annoying
He has never been seriously mentioned for any top-tier positions in Division I basketball.
He has lost much of his New York accent.
In his interviews, the Nike swoosh is always present.
Ironically, he was an assistant at Virginia when the number one-ranked team was shocked by NAIA school Chaminade (1982).
Why he might not be annoying
He led the Patriots on arguably the most improbable run to the Final Four in 2006, upending UConn, UNC and Michigan State along the way.
His team made a fool of loudmouth Billy Packer, who said that Mason wasn't a worthy pick.
His run gives hope to mid-major teams that it can be done.
Most major schools have been leery of scheduling George Mason, and their tear through the 2006 tournament validates why.
He has raised the profile of George Mason University, known primarily for its law program.
John Thompson touted him as a great coach that is unappreciated outside of the DC area long before the infamous run.
He keeps his team loose and jokes with his players.
He has honored many requests for interviews.
He has written a book about coaching.
Both of his sons play professional basketball in Europe.
