    Born in New Orleans, Louisiana
Birth name was Irving Lee Dorsey
Recorded the singles 'Ya Ya' (1961), 'Ride Your Pony' (1965), 'Get Out of My Life, Woman' (1965), 'Working in the Coal Mine' (1966), 'Holy Cow' (1966), 'Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky (From Now On)' (1969) and 'Yes We Can' (1970)

He was a lifelong smoker, which probably contributed to the emphysema that killed him.
His records epitomized the laid-back sound of New Orleans R&B.
He opened for the Clash on a US tour (1980).
He was name-checked in the Beastie Boys song 'Sure Shot.'
A DJ created a mash-up of his 'Yes We Can' single and Barack Obama's 'Yes We Can' speech.
