Birth name was Vance DeBar Colvig
Provided voices for Goofy, Pluto and Grumpy and Sneezy in 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves' for Disney
Provided the voice of Bluto in Popeye cartoons for Max Fleischer studios
Portrayed Bozo the Clown on a series of records (1946-56) and on KTTV in Los Angeles (1949-56)
Inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame as the first Bozo (2004)
Why he might be annoying
He first began performing as a clown at age 12.
He said, 'I never was able to get circuses and carnivals out of my blood after that.'
He dropped out of college and quit several newspaper cartooning jobs to join traveling circuses.
His pre-Bozo shtick as a clown was playing clarinet off-key while making funny faces.
Why he might not be annoying
He enjoyed visiting children's hospitals and orphanages and 'doing my silly stuff to make them laugh.'
Larry Harmon stole his thunder by claiming to be the original Bozo.
After developing lung cancer, he became an early advocate of putting warning labels on cigarette packages.
