    During the partition of India, was claimed by both India and Pakistan

    As of 2009, India controls 54,571 square miles, Pakistan controls 33,145 and China controls 14,500

    Population is 2/3 Muslim, 30% Hindu
    India and Pakistan went to war over the area in 1947, 1965 and 1999.

    The claimants to parts of the area all have nuclear weapons.

    According to Doctors Without Borders, 12% of women in Kashmir are victims of sexual abuse from the Indian army and separatist groups.
    Its poverty rate of 4% is one of the lowest in India.
    Kashmiri willow is used for high-quality cricket bats.
    The town of Gulmarg is both one of India's most popular ski resorts and home of the world's highest altitude green golf course.
    Because the Indian constitution did not allow people from outside of Jammu and Kashmir to purchase land, many people live in houseboats.
