Why they might be annoying:

Their name was a nonsense word Barlow often muttered during recording sessions.
Robert Christgau dismissed their pre-'Bakesale' records as 'demos for sale' and 'five so-called albums.'
They went on an extended hiatus (2000-07), with Barlow commenting, 'We'll come back when the people want us back.'
Barlow ended up having more success with his side project, Folk Implosion.

Why they might not be annoying:

The band started as an outlet for Barlow's songwriting after J. Mascis took creative control of Dinosaur Jr.
Band members would trade instruments during performances.
Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore said that they 'created what we called lo-fi.'
They were scheduled to be Nirvana's opening act on the European tour that never occurred due to Kurt Cobain's suicide.
