Why he might be annoying:

He became the last Swedish king to directly intervene in government, forcing the resignation of a liberal prime minister (1914).
During the 1930s, he had an affair with restaurateur and petty criminal Kurt Haijby, who later extorted 170,000 kronor in hush money from the Royal Court.
When Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, he sent Hitler a letter thanking him for eliminating 'the Bolshevik pest' and congratulating him on his 'already achieved victories.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a devoted tennis player who founded Sweden's first tennis club and occasionally played internationally under the name 'Mr. G.'
During World War II, he interceded to get better conditions for two tennis players imprisoned by Nazi Germany, Jean Borotra of France and Gottfried von Cramm of Germany.
During a visit to Berlin, he tried to convince Hitler to relent in his persecution of the Jews.
He called on the government of Hungary to save its Jewish population 'in the name of humanity.'
