Why they might be annoying
Every year, they claim 'this is the year.' You know the rest of the story.
They originally attended games at Huntington Avenue Ground, a wooden fire trap (1901-1911).
Originally, only a sparse 27,000 of them could view a game at Fenway.
Nearby store keepers fell victim to broken windows from home run balls. The Red Sox organization had to construct a 23 foot net in left field.
They chant personal attacks on the opposing players.
They use the 'Curse of the Bambino' for their team's futility. Thinking that one World Series victory after 86 years broke the curse.
It is hard to tell what they feel most passionate about; loving the Red Sox or hating the New York Yankees.
They burn effigies of George Steinbrenner, Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens and other Yankee greats outside Fenway Park.
They have to suffer such embarrassing choking moments as Bucky Dent's 1978 home run, Bill Buckner's 1986 error and Aaron Boone's 2003 ALCS home run.
Their team was known as the Somersets (1901-02) and Pilgrims (1903-06).
They endured watching their team blow a 14½ game lead in July to lose the title to their rival Yankees in a playoff game (1978).
Until 2004, just about none of the fans could remember their team winning a World Series.
Why they might not be annoying
Despite having a bitter rivalry with the Yankees, they gave them a standing ovation, even some Red Sox loyalists donning NY caps, after the September 11th attack.
They are pure traditionalists. If a new stadium is built to replace the old one, they insist it to be a replica of the current Fenway.
Their stadium is named after the area it was built in, 'The Fens.'
They are incredibly loyal.
Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Jennifer Lopez, Stephen King, John Kerry and Ken Burns are included in their numbers.
Although their park caught fire in January 1934, it was still ready for 1934's opening day.
They nicknamed the left field wall 'The Green Monster.'
Despite Ted Williams' gruffness towards them, they stood by him.
250 seats on the green monster sold out at $50 in 2003, so management doubled the price to $100 for 2004, which also sold out.
They witnessed Roger Clemen's 20 strike out game (1986).
They are the first baseball team to rally back down three games to zero to win a play off series (2004).
