Formed the Green Mountain Boys to defend disputed territory (between New Hampshire and New York)
Commander of the force that captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British
Captured in Canada by the British several months later (1775)
Returned to the US as part of a prisoner exchange (1778)
Wrote 'Narrative of Colonel Ethan Allen's Captivity'
Died in Burlington at 51

Why he might be annoying:

Because of his capture, he missed out on most of the Revolutionary War.
The Green Mountain Boys were initially intended to fight New Yorkers.
He was involved in negotiations to annex Vermont as part of Canada (probably to force the US to recognize it as a state).
His name is now used by a furniture shop.

Why he might not be annoying:

His capture of Fort Ticonderoga (with only 83 men) was one of the turning points of the American Revolution.
He is Vermont's best known military hero.
He enjoyed reading.
There is a statue of him in the US Capitol.
