He and Edmund Hillary were the first human beings to conquer Mount Everest, the highest place on earth. (May 29, 1953)
Why he might be annoying
Risking one's life to get to the top of a mountain is a pretty stupid thing.
George Mallory, not Hillary or Norgay coined the phrase that he was climbing Mount Everest 'because it is there.'
Even though he spoke several languages, he never learned how to write.
Why he might not be annoying
He deposited in the highest of all snows some offerings to the divinities that had made Chomolungma (Mount Everest) sacred to his people.
Unlike George Mallory, Hillary and Norgay actually made it to the top of Everest. (At least they made it to the top and back!)
Nobody was killed, maimed or even frostbitten during the Hillary and Norgay Everest expedition.
Norgay and Hillary used their Everest fame to help make the Sherpas' underprivileged existence better known to the world.
He spoke seven languages.
He and Hillary 'climbed as a team, period' and claim to have reached the summit 'almost together.'
He was one of 13 children.
He is a positive role model for the Sherpa community.
He opened mountaineering school in Darjeeling, India.
He is said to have smiled all the way up to the top of Everest.
