He was a failed cartoonist, who actually drew clowns.
He usually appeared in sad-face makeup and tattered clothing.
His act was trying to sweep up the spotlight.
He was a friggin' clown, who wrote an autobiography.
He was inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians, even though he was born in Kansas.
He named his son Emmett Kelly, Jr.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was named in honor of Irish poet Robert Emmett.
He was loved by kids and adults alike.
He made weary Americans during the Great Depression forget their troubles and laugh.
The Emmett Kelly Museum was built in his honor in his hometown of Sedan.
He is the most famous and recognizable clowns of all time.
