Hall of Fame for Great Americans

Historical Heroes

Located on the grounds of Bronx Community College (formerly part of the New York University campus). Inductees must be US citizens (only natural-born citizens through 1910), must have been dead at least 25 years (10 years through 1920) and have made 'a major contribution to the economic, political, or cultural life of the nation.' Elections originally held every five years; changed to every three years in 1970 to allow for an election during the Bicentennial. The 1976 election was also the last election (as of 2021) due to financial difficulties after NYU abandoned its Bronx campus. Missing: George Peabody (1900); James Kent (1900); Emma Willard (1905); Phillips Brooks (1910); John Lothrop Motley (1910); Mark Hopkins (1915); Rufus Choate (1915); Alice Freeman Palmer (1920); James Buchanan Eads (1920)
