Also scored the TV series 'Rawhide' (1959-66)
Became a US citizen (1937)
Died of complications from a broken hip following a fall

Why he might be annoying:

He composed 'The Storming of the Winter Palace' to celebrate the third anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia.
After winning the Oscar for best score for 'The High and the Mighty,' he said, 'I would like to thank my colleagues: Brahms, Bach, Beethoven, Richard Strauss,' drawing laughter from the audeince. He later wrote, 'Unfortunately, I didn't intend to be funny.'
His theme for The Wild, Wild West was rejected by the producers.

He was nominated for 21 Oscars and won four.
He fought to integrate the Hollywood studio orchestras.
He was mugged when he returned home after attending his first wife's funeral (1967).
