He was sentenced to five years' probation for shooting at a police helicopter (1973).
He and his girlfriend shaved arrowheads into their hair.
He was let go from the Steelers over continuing weight problems.
He ballooned to over 400 pounds in retirement.
He was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the fatal crash.

He was part of Pittsburgh's legendary 'Steel Curtain' defense.
Steelers chairman Dan Rooney said he was 'one of the toughest players to ever wear a Steelers uniform.'
After retiring he became a minister and was, according to linebacker Andy Russell, 'a much more thoughtful kind of person.'
