He gave up acting in films after only one talkie and a handful of silents, in part because he thought the camera made his lips look thin.
Because almost all his work was on the stage, he is virtually unknown by the general public despite being an enormous star during his lifetime.
He was a perfectionist who once called a rehearsal for a play that was closing in three days.
He was married to actress Lynn Fontanne for 55 years, from 1922 until his death.
He acted with his wife exclusively beginning in 1929.

They took huge pay cuts to work with the Theater Guild, who produced experimental original works and classics.
When they met Noel Coward before any of them were famous, Coward predicted that they would get married, they would all become stars, and the three of them would act in a play Coward wrote.
The prediction came true when the three of them starred in Coward's 'Design for Living,' one of the biggest hits of the 1930s.
He got an Oscar nomination for his only talkie, 'The Guardsman' (1931).
He won Tony Awards as both an actor and director, and an Emmy.
