Poet
    (June 5, 1898-August 19, 1936)
Member of the avant-garde ‘Generation of 1927'
Wrote poetry collections ‘Impressions and Landscapes (1918),' ‘Songs (1927),' ‘Gypsy Ballads (1928),' ‘Sonnets of Dark Love (1935)' and ‘A Poet in New York (1940)'
Wrote plays ‘Marina Pineda (1925)' and the trilogy ‘Blood Wedding (1932),' ‘Yerma (1934)' and ‘The House of Bernarda Alba (1936)'
    Assassinated in 1936
Portrayed by Andy Garcia in ‘The Disappearance of García Lorca (1997)'
He was a mediocre student when a teenager.
His first play was about a failed romance between a butterfly and a cockroach (it bombed).
He broke ties with friends Louis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí because he felt their film ‘Un chien andalou (1929)' mocked him.
When he was thirty, his wealthy family bankrolled a trip to the United States to help cure his depression.
At the start of the Spanish civil war he insisted on visiting Granada even though he was endangering his life.
His poems are praised for their skillful combination of surrealism and Andalusian folklore.
He tirelessly championed on behalf of the poor and oppressed.
His depression may have been rooted in the need to hide his homosexuality.
He was murdered in 1936 by General Franco's Fascist militants for his left-wing sympathies.
The details of his death are unclear, and some believe homophobia not politics motivated his killers.
His work was banned in Spain until the 1950's (some pieces with homosexual themes remained banned until the 1970's).
