Don Hoak said, ‘Only once did I ever see water fly off a spitball, and the man who threw me the pitch was Burdette.’
Sportswriter Red Smith said he needed three columns for Burdette’s pitching record: won, lost and relative humidity.
In the 1958 World Series, he had chances to close out the championship in Games 5 and 7, but lost both.
At the height of his fame, he cut a record called ‘Three Strikes and You’re Out.’

He was named MVP of the 1957 World Series after winning Games 2, 5 and 7.
He was the first pitcher since 1905 to throw two shutouts in a World Series.
He twice led the National League in shutouts (1956,59).
