Directed the films 'Swing Time (1936),' 'Gunga Din (1939),' 'Woman of the Year (1942),' 'A Place in the Sun (1951),' 'Shane (1953),' 'Giant (1956),' 'The Diary of Anne Frank (1959)' and 'The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965)'

Why he might be annoying:

Unlike most other directors from the 'golden era,' he amassed only a small body of work in his career.
He was a perfectionist; often demanding re-shoots and edits to get scenes exactly how he wanted them.
James Dean called his filming style the 'around the clock method,' due to the fact that he would shoot scenes from every possible angle, making the filming process long and tedious.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in World War II.
Despite making few films in comparison to other directors of the 'golden era,' he was meticulous in his work.
He directed James Dean in his last film performance ('Giant') and received death threats from Dean fans if any of his scenes were cut from the final product.
He was president of the Screen Directors Guild from 1941-1943 and 1946-1948.
He won two Best Director Oscars and two DGA Awards (in 1952 for 'A Place in the Sun' and in 1957 for 'Giant').
