She lost her only son in the Korean War.
She received Tony nominations for 'Raisin in the Sun' and 'Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright.'
Her role in 'Raisin' helped change the image of the black woman on stage and on screen.
She told Ebony magazine that after her son died, that she 'didn't owe the government anything else other than taxes.'
Her mother was a full-blooded Apache Indian.
