Produced and wrote for Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight and The Temptations
Sold interests in Motown for $61 million (1988)
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1988)

Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of high school to become a boxer.
He had a child out of wedlock with Diana Ross.
He has eight children.
One of his daughters married Jermaine Jackson.
He didn't give proper credit to Motown's studio musicians, namely the Funk Brothers.
He has been sued many times by songwriters and musicians for not paying song royalties.
He relocated Motown from Detroit to Los Angeles (1972).
His ex-wife bashed him in her memoirs about working at Motown.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the Korean War.
He started Motown Records on an $800 loan and turned it into one of the most successful music companies.
He helped create the 'Motown Sound' that continues to be very popular and recognizable.
He helped start and build-up the careers of many black singers and musicians.
He positively changed stereotypes of black people in rock music.
He carefully created and promoted bands and music that could be enjoyed by all races.
He named his publishing company Jobete after his three oldest children.
He said: Motown 'had an atmosphere that allowed people to experiment creatively and gave them the courage not to be afraid to make mistakes.'
