    Best known for portraying Sheriff J.W. Pepper in the James Bond films ‘Live and Let Die’ (1973) and ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ (1974)
    Also appeared in the films ‘Cool Hand Luke’ (1967), ‘The Last Detail’ (1973), ‘Silver Streak’ (1976), ‘Superman II’ (1981), ‘The Untouchables’ (1987), ‘Eight Men Out’ (1988), ‘Bonfire of the Vanities’ (1990) and ‘Sunshine State’ (2002)
    Appeared on Broadway in ‘The Cave Dwellers’ (1957-58), ‘J.B.’ (1958-59), ‘All the Way Home’ (1960-61) and ‘The Shadow Box’ (1977)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a northerner who was typecast as rednecked sheriffs.
    He was one of several actors who made one-episode appearances as replacement sheriffs in The Dukes of Hazzard when James Best, who portrayed Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane, walked out in a dispute about his dressing room.
    His first marriage ended in divorce in less than three years.
    His daughter admitted that if he had been able to choose which role he would be remembered for, ‘he would never have picked’ Sheriff Pepper.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He earned two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
    His second marriage, to Laurie Harper, lasted 61 years.
    He was a longtime member of the Actors Studio in New York.
