Why she might be annoying:

She described herself as a 'foot-washing, psalm-singing, total immersion Democrat.'
She predicted the Equal Rights Amendment would 'pass in a breeze when two or three people in the Senate move on to that great steaming cauldron below.'
She was a founding member of the Bay at the Moon Society, an Austin, Texas, group of people who sing and, yes, bay at the full moon.
She called death 'going to that great Democratic convention in the sky.'

She had a self-depreciating sense of humor.
She wrote Lyndon Johnson's first public statement after the Kennedy assassination.
She said of her approach to women's lib, 'I'm not a screamer. I get to people the screamers can't get to.'
She survived two bouts with breast cancer.
After the death of her brother, she took in his three teenaged children and reared them to adulthood.
She said about the stress of her unexpected motherhood, 'Stress has had a bum rap. I think it beats boredom hands down.'
