Why he might be annoying:

He had an abnormally large head that was often mocked by satirists.
Plato accused him of making Athenians greedy and lazy.
He limited citizenship to those with Athenian lineage on both sides.
He wept in public when his mistress (rumored to be a madam) was verbally attacked.
He helped start the Peloponnesian War that eventually destroyed Athens.

Why he might not be annoying:

Under him Athens became the cultural and political center of ancient Greece.
He made all citizens eligible for official positions.
He lived economically to set a good example for the public.
He allowed the poor to attend plays for free.
His famous Funeral Oration honored citizens who died defending Athens.
