Why he might be annoying:

He missed two chunks of the 1955 season with injuries: first due to a sore shoulder, then with bruised ribs after being hit with the batting cage as groundskeepers were moving it during a pre-game workout.
He chain smoked.
'Podres of the Padres' was probably a bit of a tongue twister for announcers.
In three years on the Hall of Fame ballot,he drew eight votes -- total.

Why he might not be annoying:

Dodgers general manager Buzzie Bavasi said, 'I had a lot of great pitchers with the Dodgers -- Don Drysdale, Don Sutton and Sandy Koufax -- but when we needed to win a ballgame, who do you think we went to? Johnny Podres.'
In the '55 Series, he pitched a complete-game victory on his 23rd birthday in Game 3 and a shutout in the climactic Game 7.
He led the National League in ERA (2.66) and shutouts (6) in 1957 and in winning percentage (.783) in 1961.
Players he helped develop as a pitching coach include Curt Schilling and Frank Viola.
