Premise: Sixteen contestants play a modern-day twist on the pirate game to achieve captainship of a vessel; one player is eliminated each episode in ‘pirate’s court’
Why Pirate Master might be annoying
It drew curious comparisons to Survivor.
Burnett invented a preposterous tale, complete with fictitious 17th-century captain (Henry Steel), for the contestants.
The contestants are decked out in stereotypical pirate gear.
The TV Guide Channel gave the only sneak preview of the series.
It premiered on the exact date of Survivor’s seventh anniversary.
Why Pirate Master might not be annoying
It aired in the time slot that usually houses Big Brother.
The gold coins found on competitive excursions can be used either for barter or as real currency outside the program.
The climate, politics and terrain do not differ greatly from what the pirates of the era faced.
Sabotage points can carry an extreme price tag or be overcome very easily.
Contestants can’t afford to be lazy — the vessel on which they sleep is in constant need of maintenance!
A unanimous vote can eliminate the captain of the ship.
Rupert Boneham isn’t involved (though one contestant was compared to him).
