    They are condemned as a terrorist organization by 31 countries.
    Their recruits are mainly disadvantaged and unemployed Tamil youths.
    They help maintain law and order in the areas they control.
    It agreed to a ceasefire with the Sri Lankan government (2002).
    They set up a task force to provide aid after the 2004 tsunami.
    They allow women to join.
    They eventually apologized to the Muslims expelled from Jaffna and invited them to return.
