Refusing to go quietly, he said in his last broadcast: 'Just so that we're all singing from the same hymn book, it was not my idea to go - I didn't want to leave you at all and I know from your messages that you don't want me to go either.'

His firing sparked widespread outrange among listeners, even inspiring an Early Day motion in Parliament calling on BBC to keep him on.
He made a much-publicized return to BBC Radio, in 2011, in honor of his 90th birthday, hosting the 'Sir Jimmy Young at 90' broadcast.
When asked if he was guilty of being too soft with his guests, he answered: 'You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. I hold conversations. I am a listener.'
