    He wrote two autobiographies.
    He lied about his age to get into the RAF.

    He was a lounge crooner whose popularity faded in the late 50s, with the advent of Rock n' Roll.
    He claimed to have got his break in radio shortly after a fortune teller told him he experience a comeback.
    He was accused of being a soft-touch with political guests on his program.
    He relinquished his radio job after a bitter power struggle with BBC execs, in 2002.
    Refusing to go quietly, he said in his last broadcast: 'Just so that we're all singing from the same hymn book, it was not my idea to go - I didn't want to leave you at all and I know from your messages that you don't want me to go either.'

    As a child, he nearly died of bronchitis.
    He had #1 UK chart hits in 'Unchained Melody' and 'The Man from Laramie,' both in 1955.
    He interviewed every British Prime Minister between the years 1964 and 2010.
    Margaret Thatcher stated that he was her favorite interviewer.
    He performed several live shows from Moscow, the first being in 1977.
    He was knighted, in 2002, in recognition of his years long 'services to broadcasting.'
    His firing sparked widespread outrange among listeners, even inspiring an Early Day motion in Parliament calling on BBC to keep him on.
    He made a much-publicized return to BBC Radio, in 2011, in honor of his 90th birthday, hosting the 'Sir Jimmy Young at 90' broadcast.
    When asked if he was guilty of being too soft with his guests, he answered: 'You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. I hold conversations. I am a listener.'
