    Wrote ‘Transitional Poem’ (1929), ‘From Feathers to Iron’ (1932), ‘A Time to Dance and Other Poems’ (1935), ‘Overtures to Death’ (1938), ‘Short Is the Time’ (1945), ‘Pegasus and Other Poems’ (1957) and ‘The Whispering Roots and Other Poems’ (1970)

    Father of Daniel Day-Lewis

Why he might be annoying:

    He joined the Communist Party (1935).
    His early poems were didactic and obsessed with left-wing politics.
    He was distant from his children.
    Westminster Abbey declined to put up a plaque honoring him in their Poets’ Corner.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He fought against the fascists during the Spanish Civil War.
    In his autobiography, he renounced Communism (1960).
    Under the name Nicholas Blake, he had a successful second writing career, penning 20 mystery novels.
    He admired Thomas Hardy and asked to buried as near to his grave in Stinsford as possible.
