Why he might be annoying
He refused to wear his 1960 championship ring. He felt snubbed when he finished eighth in the MVP ballot (teammate Dick Groat won the award) so he wore his All-Star ring instead.
Clemente said before the start of the 1971 World Series, 'Nobody does anything better than me in baseball' (he did hit .414 and won World Series MVP honors).
His 1955 rookie card is worth over $2000 (for a piece of cardboard).
Why he might not be annoying
His oldest brother, Luis died of a brain tumor (December 31, 1954).
He had chronic back problems from 1955 to 1961.
His Pirates won the World Series, beating the Bronx Bombers, he batted .310 (October 13, 1960).
In the 1971 World Series Clemente batted .414, he homered in game 7, which helped them win 2-1. He was voted the Series MVP.
At thirty-eight he batted .312 (1972)
He had 3,000 hits in his career.
He died in a plane crash on a relief mission to help earthquake victims of Nicaragua (18 years to the day of his brother's death - December 31, 1972).
The Baseball Hall of Fame waived their five year waiting period and unanimously selected him for induction (February 1973).
His uniform number, 21, was retired (April 6, 1973).
